Singing in Mother Tongue Event
On 13th March 2011, six of Sheffield's
complementary schools took part in the Singing in Mother Tongue Event in the Winter Gardens in the city centre. This event was
part of the International Mother Tongue day celebrations. Children (and some parents) sang in different languages
and traditional costume.
The schools that took part were: Sheffield Korean School The Japanese
Play and Study group The Eritrean School The Arabic Community Language School Sheffield Star Mandarin
School Club OK- Russian Club and Complementary School
It was a successful event and everyone that
took part in the event really enjoyed it and it was a good example of Sheffield's diverse culture.
We are looking to make this an annual event.
Sheffield Chinese School Performances

In September 2010 Languages Sheffield has been represented at two events: a seminar about multilingualism at MOSAIC Centre for Research on Multilingualism at the University of Birmingham, and the centenary members' day of Institute of Linguists: the main lecture by David Crystal talked about four ways to celebrate and promote the phenomenon of language and diversity
of languages: - celebratory days, for
example 26 September, which could be more widely celebrated - would you like to send a friend a languages card for Languages
Day?
- dedicated places, for example the
house of languages in Barcelona Casa de les Llengues
- art works, for example a sculpture,
a film, …
- a prize or award
